Recently, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a decision that has implications for our ministry here at St. John's. Without attempting too much detail, they intend to require that employers who provide health insurance include coverage for abortion and contraception, some forms of which can cause abortion.
They are NOT exempting religious employers from this mandate, particularly when a religious employer is served by someone who is not a member of their faith. Thus the federal government is requiring by force of law that a church pay for something that is in direct violation of conscience and the Law of God.
I don't claim to be especially conversant with the details of this policy and encourage you to inform yourself in this matter, and also to read the statement released by Synod President Harrison, which can be found on the home page of our website.
Though we as a Synod are temporarily grandfathered through the foresight of Concordia Health Plan's leadership, this is still a very ominous development. We cannot comply with a law that would cause us to violate God's Law, and refusing to comply would mean that we must be willing to face the consequences.
This is a very serious matter, and I entreat you to pray to God that this decision would be reversed and resolved in a godly manner.

That is really scarey.
What about the separation of church and state. It's getting scarey out there.
