Music Ministry

We seek to honor God by giving our best through His marvelous gift of music.
Everyone is invited to participate in the Music Ministry and we are always open to new opportunities!

Chancel Choir

  • This is a joyful group of adult men and women who have a lot of fun together in fellowship and in song!
  • The choir sings a wide variety of choral pieces, mostly at the Sunday 8:00 am worship service, with extra performances around Christmas & Easter seasons.
  •  Rehearsals are on Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the church from September to early June.
  • The Chancel Choir is led by Karen Kempin; if you are interested in participating, contact her at kkempin@sjlmidland.org
  • “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16)

Handbell Choir

  • To be part of this group, it is helpful to have some handbell and/or music reading experience and be able to commit to regular attendance at rehearsals.
  • Handbells perform in worship at various times throughout the year, at both the 8:00 and the 10:45 am services as well as Christmas & Easter seasons.
  • Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:00 pm in the church from September to May.
  • The Handbell Choir is led by Laura Maiers; if interested in ringing, contact her at lelindg@gmail.com
  • “The sound of the bells will be heard when he enters the Holy Place before the Lord and when he comes out, so that he will not die.” (Exodus 28:35)

Joyful Praise Worship Team

  • The JP Worship Team leads the congregation in some hymns and more contemporary songs for our 10:45 am worship service.
  • Vocalists and instrumentalists meet to prepare for Sunday worship on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 7:00 pm in the church throughout the year.
  • This team is led by Karen Kempin; ff you are interested, or would like more information, contact her at kkempin@sjlmidland.org
  • “Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord, let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before Him with thanksgiving and extol Him with music and song.” (Psalm 95:1-2)

Solos/Ensembles

  • If you are interested and willing to share your musical gifts during any of our worship services, you are encouraged to do so.
  • We love to include soloists and small groups, both vocal and instrumental.
  • Rehearsals are at various times as needed to accommodate schedules.
  • Please contact Karen Kempin, St. John’s Director of Worship Music, at kkempin@sjlmidland.org to discuss these opportunities.
  • “Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to Him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.” (Psalm 33:2-3)
