School Information

History

St. John's Lutheran School was established in 1946 and is operated by St. John's Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod).  The school is designed to provide a complete program of quality Christian education in the Lutheran tradition based on the conviction that learning and living take on meaningful dimensions only when related to Christ.

Curriculum

Although taught as a subject each day, religion permeates the entire curriculum.  All subjects are presented in the light of God's Word.  The curriculum parallels that offered by the Midland Public Schools.

Accreditation

St. John's has National Lutheran School and Michigan Non-Public Schools Accreditation.

Admissions Policy

St. John's Lutheran School admits students of any race, color, or national/ethnic origin to have all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students of the school.  It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national / ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, athletic and other school-administered programs.  The school has the primary responsibility to educate the children of St. John's Lutheran Church members, however, it also enrolls non-member children from the surrounding area on a tuition basis.

Bus Transportation

The Midland Public School district provides transportation for most students residing in the Midland School District.

Chapel

Chapel is held regularly to provide each student a time of spiritual refreshment as the Word of God is shared.  Every Wednesday morning, the students have another opportunity to assemble in the house of God for a special Children's Service.  The sermonettes by pastors, teachers, and guest speakers, and the hymns are especially designed to meet the needs and desires of children.  The offerings brought to this service are used to help support a monthly mission project.  During the seasons of Advent and Lent, mid-day Wednesday services supersede the chapel services.  Parents are encouraged to attend any and all chapel services.  Eighth grade students serve as ushers and acolytes.

Extra-Curricular Activities

We believe that much growth and learning can take place through extra-curricular activities that the school offers our students.  We encourage students to participate in such activities and programs as choirs, interscholastic athletics, cheerleading, assembly presentations, spelling bees, essay contest, art contests, science fair, music festivals, service projects, band, social events, Battle of the Books, and operettas.  St. John's is one of ten member schools in the Bay-Midland Lutheran League and offers a variety of sports for children in Grades 5 through 8.

Hot Lunch Program

Well balanced lunches are provided daily at a nominal cost.

Parent-Teacher Society

The PTS meets 4 - 6 times during the school year to develop a close relationship between the school, church, and home.  The PTS also supports various functions of the school.  All parents of children in our school are encouraged to attend.

Volunteers

Parents with a varied amount of education and professional training are invited to serve voluntarily on a part-time basis.  Volunteers, directed by the teacher, are used to assist the teacher in carrying out assigned routine duties so that teachers are free to work with individuals and groups.
